ABBA Induction Weekend on 70′s on 7
Throughout the weekend, 70′s on 7 has been spinning heavy doses of the Swedish Super Troopers, in recognition of their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This will be also supplemented by music from the Bee Gee’s. The two surviving members will induct ABBA into the Hall Monday, March 15.
The Brothers Gibb and ABBA were pop music at the absoulute stardom levels. What both groups did have in common was the ability to write melodies and companion words that struck significant chords with listeners around the world. The vocal harmonies alone were stand-out trademarks. Particularly for the Bee Gees. Barry Gibb’s falsetto would become one of the most recognized voices in music history. Still today many new generations of people into more classic music know that voice.
For ABBA, you had 2 couples, 4 people who were in and out of relationships, putting together some of the most memorable hits of the day. ABBA’s music is the feature of the musical “Mamma Mia”, which also would become a Hollywood Commercial success, despite scathing reviews from critics and fans alike.
While I am definetly not a major fan of music from what I would call the Disco era, I readily acknowledge the fact that ABBA and the Bee Gees did something original and unique. The music touched the lives of many people and continue to find new generations of fans. You cannot escape any wedding party without hearing “Dancing Queen” at least once in the evening.
Given the tension between the four people in ABBA, it will at least be nice to see them all on stage, hopefully celebrating what they have contributed to modern popular music.
