Black Sabbath
In our continuing run of artist profiles. I return to the almighty Black Sabbath for this piece. Still my favourite band of all time because they have made the most impact on me personally and as a musician. Most people identify Sabbath as being with this original line-up shown above.
It does not matter who is in Sabbath. Sabbath is still Sabbath. Sabbath has featured many great musicians. All centered around the brilliance of guitar god Tony Iommi. Iommi has written some of the greatest riffs ever. PERIOD. Black Sabbath would forge the groundwork for all heavy metal that followed. In addition they unknowingly helped in the direction of other different sub-genres of metal. Doom and goth metal started with the direction of Sabbath.
Although most identify Ozzy as “the” singer for Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio was my favourite singer for Sabbath. Even though the first Sabbath record is still my all-time favourite record ever.
Much of the imagery painted by Sabbath lyrics focuses on so many different topics. Despite being given an early blasting for the use of Satanic references, those same blasters were then caught off guard by the anti-drugs and pro-christian lyrics of tracks like “After Forever” and “Hand of Doom”.
As Sabbath progressed into the Tony Martin era, the music did become more slick and polished but still contained worthy entries into the Sabbath catalog.
Everything and anything Sabbath has bright moments and is worth a listen. The greatest band in the world and the most influential! Sabbath cam be heard mostly on Sirius 27 Liquid Metal and Sirius 19 The Boneyard.
