Sirius Canada Pleas for Internet Radio Regulations

crtc1Sirius Canada recently urged the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to enforce further regulations on internet radio broadcasts during a recent industry hearing in Gatineau, Quebec.

Sirius Canada Inc. vice-president and general counsel, Sherry Kerr was vocal about her concern for satellite radio’s future within an unregulated internet radio landscape.

Kerr spoke of online radio as a “category killer” that would lead to the annihilation of satellite radio as a viable industry. If the CRTC accepts Sirius’ plea, federal regulations would be placed on internet broadcasts to ensure proper competition for corporate entities such as Sirius and XM Canada.

    Hello,

I believe more than the more licensing the commission should be interested in harmonizing all the radio streams in Canada, to ensure that the citizens home and abroad get the premium content wherever they may be. I’m outside and need information regarding where i can get an internet radio device which runs primarily on either CDMA or GPRS; which isn’t a mobile phone.
    Thanks.

Is this another demonstration of the “free market economy”? Regulation of internet radio will be the protection of the dinosaur technology known as satellite radio. Private profit is once again asking government to bail them out of their bad investment choices. The free market is not so free and never has been.
