The Decade Stations – The Evolution of Popular Music

A heavily favoured set of stations for the whole demographic of Sirius listeners are the 40’s right through 90’s stations. Appropriately channels 4 through 9 respectively cover this great evolution of popular music.

40’s on 4 is where listeners will hear great classic jazz and big band from 30’s and 40’s eras. Everything from the Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton Orchestras to classic vocalists like Bing Crosby. We hear in primitive form the sounds and technologies of the era.  The music itself is timeless and a great education in what was defined as popular music of the time. With 50’s on 5 and 60’s on 6, we see the early years of Rock and Roll and amazing developments in recording and producing technology. The music itself for the time is edgy and explores seemingly countless new boundaries.

Early Rock and Roll lays the groundwork for music we hear on 70’s on 7. In the late 60’s we saw the emergence of the Guitar Hero in people like Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. So 70’s on 7 we hear more guitar drive rock and the foundations of Heavy Metal with legendary acts such as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. Technology and slick production techniques assisted in giving recording engineers a wider palette of manipulations. 70’s on 7 also gives Disco credit where it was due by showcasing the most popular music of the era from its’ start to ultimate demise.

The remnants of Disco combined with different other Rock and Roll elements sparked arguable one of the most popular decades of musical evolution in the 1980s’s. 80’s on 8 is also arguably one of the most popular decade stations. How wonderfully fitting that 80’s on 8, showcasing the birth of MTV, also features original Video Jocks from MTV! Martha Quinn and her friends are smart and quick witted on this station, delivering great history lessons on the video era.

90’s on 9 showcases some of the ultimate in clean production, and the significant rise of popular alternative music. As a reminder that other forms of music continued to cross over in popularity, 90’s contains regular airings of music based on R&B, Soul, Rap and Dance/Techno.

To listen to each of the decade stations is an ear-opening experience to Sirius subscribers. We get to hear firsthand the development of music as we know it today. This is yet one of many reasons our subscriptions are completely worth every penny.
